Work Experience

Voluntary Work Experience at Ms. Cupcake

Please note, we are now accepting applications for placements commencing September 2017 onwards.

Who we are: Ms. Cupcake is London’s first entirely vegan bakery and is based in Brixton, South West London. In the year the bakery opened, owner Mellissa Morgan was named ‘Rising Star of the Year’ at the Baking Industry Awards. Since then the bakery has appeared in many newspapers, magazines and television programs. Our first cookbook was published by Square Peg (Random House) in May 2013 and a second book is on its way. Each day in our open-plan kitchen we make cupcakes, layer cakes, cookies, muffins, squares, sandwiches, savoury treats and more. Everything is always 100% vegan and additionally we make lots of products without gluten.

We have two teams at Ms. Cupcake, our shop/bakery team at our store in central Brixton (five minutes from the tube and train station) and our office team located at our off-site office (also in Brixton).  Depending on which strand of Work Experience you apply for, you will be shadowing and learning from one of those teams.  Please note we can only offer work experience for people who are a minimum age of 18 years old.

What we offer: We want to enable you to learn what you want to learn at Ms. Cupcake, so we offer three different intern programmes:

Bakery Assistant Work Experience (based at our Brixton shop)
Customer Service Work Experience (based at our Brixton shop)
Office Assistant Work Experience (based at our Brixton office)

At the start of your work experience our managers will meet with you to determine what you would like to learn during your time with Ms. Cupcake.  We will then design a programme of training and experiences around your needs for the duration of your time with us.  Placements are offered on a part time basis (3-4 days per week).  Placements generally last for 4 consecutive weeks, but we are flexible to fit around your needs and can consider longer placements.  Unfortunately we are not able to offer shorter placements. Placements need to happen on weekdays only and we prefer the placements to take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays where possible. All work experience placements are unpaid, however a vegan lunch will be provided each day if you wish. Additionally in certain cases we can offer a daily contribution to your travel expenses.

What we are looking for: We are looking for friendly, enthusiastic and reliable individuals who are looking to understand the inner workings of a vegan business and how we produce decadent ‘free from’ baking.  Experience is not necessary, but passion is!  Currently we can only provide placements for people aged 18 or older.

How to apply: If you would like to be considered for one of our Voluntary Work Experience Placements then please submit your completed application form (see below) to us at info@mscupcake.co.uk Feel free to send us some pictures of your work or a link to any online blog or social media page that you would like us to see.  Placements can start at any time throughout the year, but generally we can only manage one volunteer at a time.  Once your application has been received we will see if we can meet your needs and we will contact successful applicants to arrange an interview.
